Obama Pushes Bipartisan Budget Panel
Democrats and Republicans are unlikely to agree on how to balance the nation's books, but a proposed commission would require the two parties put aside differences and agree on a best course.
"These deficits did not happen overnight, and they won’t be solved overnight. We not only need to change how we pay for policies, but we also need to change how Washington works. The only way to solve our long-term fiscal challenge is to solve it together," Obama said in prepared remarks.
The proposal, which is up for a Senate vote and supported by President Obama, is basically in the bag already -- Obama has reportedly said he will establish a panel by executive order if the bill fails. Presumably, this a reaction to overwhelming Republican criticism of the plan.
