Accountant Caught Scalping U.S. Open Tix
Long Island accountant Marvin Schaffer was arrested for scalping U.S. Open tickets near the will-call booth at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Stadium on Aug. 31.
Queens prosecutors told the New York Daily News on Sept. 2 that at the time of his arrest, Schaffer had 339 U.S. Open tickets worth $10,000 on him -- four tickets in his pockets and 335 more in a black handbag.
According to the Daily News, a search of Schaffer's BMW turned up 20 United States Tennis Association parking permits and 28 permits for New York Jets games. Schaffer did not have a license to resell tickets and faces up to 180 days in jail if convicted. Alex Bateman, Schaffer’s lawyer, told the Daily News that "this is all a case of a big misunderstanding” and predicted that the case would be thrown out but did not provide an explanation as to why.
