IRS: Federal Employees Owe 1 Billion in Back Taxes
The roughly 98,000 men and women employed nationwide by the federal government ended FY 2010 owing about one billion dollars worth of unpaid back taxes, according to the Washington Post, $32 million higher than last year’s total, despite a slight dip in the number of delinquent employees. As the largest employer within the federal government, civilians working for the Department of Defense owed the most, with civilian workers in the army, navy and air force owing $225.7 million and other civilian Pentagon workers owing $39.4 million. The U.S. Postal Service employees also owed a significant amount, with its workers owing about $269.6 million in back taxes. Overall, Americans owe the IRS $114.2 billion in unpaid taxes, interest and penalties at the end of FY 2010.
